There were not many options nowadays on how I could safely celebrate my 20th birthday with a few friends... until I found out about Magazzino Italian Art, a fantastic museum & research center dedicated to postwar & contemporary Italian art. Located in Cold Spring, a quaint village on the Hudson River, located a mere hour north of NYC, this 20,000 square-foot museum also stands out as cultural hub in the Hudson Valley.
The main spectacle within this estate was the "Bochner Boetti Fontana" exhibit. Stunning arrays of avant-garde displays filled up the gallery with works of Mel Bochner, Alighiero Boetti & Lucio Fontana (a personal favorite of mine), all from movements in the 1960's & 1970's.
There is an impressive library & archive of various publications on art, design, architecture & glass. This aesthetically-pleasing campus was designed by Spanish architect Miguel Quismondo & opened in 2017, founded by Nancy Olnick & Giorgio Spanu. Not to mention great mountain views, open fields, swings & an awesome donkey farm.
Magazzino is currently open to the public via reservation only from Thursday-Monday. Admission is free. I highly recommend visiting this gem for a day trip & don't forget to check out the whole town itself... historic real estate, views of West Point, awesome shops & a great dinner at Cathryn's Tuscan Grill.
